Physical Education
Physical Education
Delivery of high-quality Physical Education is the foundation on which our PESSPA Strategy is built. We believe Physical Education teaches pupils more than just how to move, instead pupil learn through movement and their interaction with the world around them. Our curriculum is planned to be progressive, and makes explicit reference to physical development, whilst contributing to social, emotional and intellectual growth.
High-quality teaching of physical education underpins the quality of our PE curriculum design and delivery. Our staff are trained to promote a love of learning and an intellectual curiosity which inspires and motivates our pupils. Our ‘Head, Heart, Hands approach’ allows West Heath Primary School to meet the aims of the national curriculum and embed the knowledge, skills and values required to be successful in PE, School Sport and Physical Activity. We aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need now and in the future. Enabling them to live a physical active, happy, healthy lifestyle and ‘Be a Star… Shine Bright’.
Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.

In addition to theoretical knowledge pupils learn about the different roles and responsibilities associated with PE and School Sport. Pupils apply their knowledge by demonstrating their ability to plan and compose, recognize patterns, understand games and conceptual ideas, use ICT, take on leadership and management roles.
The Heart (the feeling me) element of our PE Curriculum underpins the attitudes and behaviors we expect our pupils to demonstrate as they encounter challenge and opportunities. PE encourages the development of growth mindset, teaching pupils how do deal with criticism, judgement, challenges, obstacles, and motivate themselves to be autonomous. Through values education in PE pupils learn to how be honest, resilient, respectful, determined, empathetic, collaborative and aspire to be excellent. Practical application of these values and the development of a growth mindset empower pupils to become respectable citizens, who make valuable contributions to society. PE and School Sport are powerful tools to expose pupils to real life concepts and scenarios.
Pupils are championed for their application of their Head, Heart and Hands. Our holistic approach to Physical Education curriculum gives all pupils the opportunity to ‘Be a Star and Shine Bright’.
